Music and Numbers, in Real Time

I'm taking a songwriting class this semester, and my teacher is awesome. He was talking about charts, especially the Nashville number system. This system is used to aid musicians in playing the right chords for a particular song. I know a little bit of music theory, but I'd have to listen to a song over and over and over again to even begin to figure out what chords the song uses.

My teacher plays a pop song, and starts writing numbers and symbols in time with the music. He wrote in a bit of a fury, keeping up with the beat of the song. By the song's end, he had drawn up all of the chords in the Nashville number system. I was incredibly impressed!

Today, I am grateful for a songwriting teacher with an impressive ear for musical chords.
