I have been writing this blog for a few years now, and I've never been perfect at it. In previous years, I have missed a few days or more for various circumstances (no wifi that day, stayed up too late, etc.). But this year, I wanted to improve, to have a daily grateful every single day of the year, even if I may have to write them retroactively on occasion.
Today, I am grateful for this accomplishment: 365 unique, consecutive daily gratefuls.
This is a blog of gratitude, updated daily. This blog is the result of a personal challenge: to see how many things I can find to be grateful for. Is there a limit to the amount of good in our lives, in our modern world? I believe the limit doesn't exist.

A Good Doctor
One of my less pleasant presents I received for the holidays was an ingrown toenail. I think it was the result of that pedicure I allowed myself to be talked into shortly before my wedding.
Anyway, it wasn't getting any better, so I finally decided to go see a doctor about it. The doctor was rather cheerful and reassuring, and I appreciated that. He gave me some really helpful information and provided the necessary prescriptions.
Of course, that's everyone's dream doctor visit. It's not exciting, but it was exactly what I needed. That is why I am grateful for the doctor who helped me today.

A Missionary Friend Comes Through Town
My 2-year mission, which ended more than four years ago, continues to bless me every day. The memories and lessons I gained during that time will stay with me forever.
Today, my mission blessed me in a more direct way when one of my fellow returned-missionary friend and his wife came through town. We went out for dinner and had great conversation. We were so grateful and glad to see each other. It was a splendid evening.

Quiet at the Office, More Work Done
I was surprised to find almost no one at the office today, until I remembered that most people would be gone on vacations this week. I kind of liked the extra quiet. I am grateful for the extra work I was able to complete today.

Planning Session and To Do List
Christmas is over, and though we still have New Year's Day soon, I still need to get back to work. Ugh...not to mention all the cleaning and organizing that needs to be done at home. That's why we decided to plan out our near future, to organize all the tasks that need to be done. Now, there is a neat, organized to do list hanging on the refrigerator. Looking at that helps make everything much more manageable. This helps relieve me of the stress and pressure I've felt throughout the day. I am grateful for a planning session and a to do list.

Safe and Easy Drive Home
My wife and I had a long drive to see my family for Christmas. It was a tiring drive, such that we felt the need to make several rest stops for breaks and to switch drivers. Today was the drive back to our home, and for some reason it felt like a much faster and easier drive. we only had to make one or two stops, and we didn't switch drivers at all. Part of if may have been that the sun wasn't so bothersome.
In any case, I am very grateful for a safe and easier drive back home after a wonderful Christmas vacation.

Jesus' Disciples Followed Him and So Can We
I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, and I strive to live by His teachings, principles, and example. I am grateful that even in my adult years I can feel and appreciate the true meaning and wonder behind Christmas.
Merry Christmas, everyone, and may the holidays find you well and happy! :)

Jesus Cared for His Loved Ones, and So Can You
I'm with my entire family for Christmas, for the first time in a few years. I love them very much and I love making each person happy. Today, though, I got a painful infection in one of my toes, and so I was the one being cared for. My mother provided some treatment for it, and my wife was beside me, helping me deal with the pain. These are things I would certainly do if the roles were reversed. This is one of the many reasons I feel love and gratitude in my family and for my family. :)

Jesus Was a Peacemaker and You Can Be One Too
I am grateful for apologies. I feel better when I give one that I owe to someone. I feel better when someone sincerely apologizes to me. Everything is just better with forgiveness and peace, isn't it?

Jesus Showed Gratitude and So Can You
This is an easy challenge for me, something I do every day. As always, I am grateful for the blessings of gratitude.

Jesus Taught Us to Forgive Others and so Can You
I don't think I was in a situation that required forgiveness today, because every interaction I had today was pleasant and amiable. Even so, I really appreciated the suggestion on the LDS website for today: "Be kind instead of right for today." I once had great struggles with this principle (and I'm still learning, of course). It's hard to learn that sometimes kindness is truly more important than what you think is right. Over the years, I have learned to pick my battles, to ignore things that would hurt more than help, even if I felt strongly about it. I am grateful for Jesus Christ's supreme, sublime example of forgiveness.

Jesus Saw Potential in Others and So Can You
I recently got married, and I am so excited about it! Every day I've spent with my wife, I've seen the potential to become a great mother and a wonderful expert in her chosen field of work. I also see great potential in our relationship. I am grateful for the potential I see in my wife and in our relationship. I know I an fairly new to this wonderful matrimonial journey, but my beliefs and principles encourage me to have great hope for the future.

Jesus Calmed the Storm and So Can You
Today, I finally got my Christmas shopping done! Shopping and many other things about this season can often make December feel like a whirlwind of activity. Today, I am grateful for the time I was able to peacefully prepare and wrap meaningful Christmas presents for my family.

Jesus Honored the Sabbath and So Can You
My Christmas vacation has just started, but I still felt that I needed to at least attend church and partake of the sacrament somewhere, if I could. Thankfully, there was a sacrament meeting near me this morning, and I am grateful that I was able to keep the Sabbath day holy by attending church, even while away from home.

Jesus Cared for His Mother and So Can You
I thanked my mother today, because I'm thankful for her every day. She is the greatest force for good in my life right now. She has given me everything I need and more to prepare for adulthood and to prepare for my eventual marriage.

Jesus Showed Compassion and So Can You
The suggestion on the LDS website is to give only encouragement online. I am grateful for the opportunities I have to #sharegoodness online. That is all I try to do, share what I believe if just, true, good, and right. I feel no need to contribute to any negativity on the internet. I feel every need to contribute to the good things of the world and online.

Jesus Worshiped Through Song and So Can You
When I walk alone or wait for the bus, I love to sing Christmas music. My favorite Christmas songs are those that focus on Jesus Christ, His life, and His ministry. I love any other Christmas song that I feel captures the essence of Christmas, that idea of "peace on earth, good will to men." Listen, play, sing, write, I feel joy in doing all of these things regarding Christmas songs and hymns. I am grateful for the joy I feel from Christmas songs and hymns.

Jesus Taught Us to Clothe the Naked and So Can You
In the process of moving between apartments, I realize how much extra stuff I actually have. I certainly have several articles of clothing that I could give away to those who need it more. I am grateful for the excess "stuff" I have, because now I have the opportunity to give to others.

Jesus Showed Humility and So Can You
The lyrics to a new original song were forming in my mind this evening on the bus ride back from work. I started to create a few verses, but I paused when I realized I should humbly pray for heavenly inspiration. I felt that way because the song I was creating was focused on Jesus Christ, His birth and His sacrifice for mankind. The song is intended to be suitable for Christmas. I decided not to work or think too fast, so I can be attentive to the impressions of the Spirit. I truly believe the words I wrote became at least a little more meaningful because I chose to ask God for some help and guidance.
If you're interested, the words I wrote are below (sung to an original tune):
Wise men traveled from afar,
Their path guided by a star.
Gloria in excelsis deo!
The babe to see in wondering awe.
A crown will pierce His sinless head
Yet live, the Judge of quick and dead!
Gloria in excelsis deo!
Take Living Water, Living Bread
The lowing oxen, lamb, and sheep
Surround the child in humble keep.
Gloria in excelsis deo!
All while He lay in heavenly sleep.
His work and wonders He will show,
Will walk the pathway we should go.
Gloria in excelsis deo!
Grant love and peace to those who know.
The Prince of Peace for me and you,
Jehovah, and Messiah, too,
Gloria in excelsis deo!
The Christ, the way, the life, the truth.

Jesus Taught Others and So Can You
Not really teaching, but reconnecting. I was able to (finally) meet up with a long-time friend for dinner today. We spent a couple hours talking about our schooling and work in the past year, and our relationships. I wouldn't call this teaching, but one thing great teachers do is connect with people on their level in order to make a good impression. My friend and I have done that for each other for many years, and though we don't get to see each other often, I am grateful I got to be with him for a couple hours today.

Jesus Ministered to Children and So Can You
It is not always possible for me to complete these #LightTheWorld "challenges." Today, I didn't really see or interact with any children. I went to church with a hundred or so young adults like me, I skyped my family, and I played tabletop games with friends. Not much opportunity to minister to children, per se, but I did decide to focus on people: my roommates, my family, my friends, and my fellow church-goers. I spent the entire day focusing on my time with them. I am grateful for the edifying interactions I had with people today. I felt especially good when an ecclesiastical leader told me how much he appreciated having me in the congregation (since I'm leaving the neighborhood soon).

Jesus Helped People Walk and So Can You
This has been a good day with my friends, particularly my roommates. The semester is nearing its end, many people will soon be moving in and out around here, so when the time came to go on a Christmas shopping trip with my roommates (complete with dinner), I was glad to join them (especially since I myself would soon be moving out).
I walked with them, talked with them, enjoyed my time with them. I am grateful for that time.

Jesus Visited the Lonely and So Can You
I went to a fancy dinner tonight. I didn't have to go, but someone invited me to go with them, so I went. I'm glad I did. Good food and conversation. Best of all, the person I went with told me, "Thanks for coming with me." I am grateful for a pleasant evening of a good Christmas dinner.

Jesus Taught Us to Pray
I am grateful for Christ's example of prayer. The most important aspect of prayer is, of course, that fact that it is our way of communing with God. There is another direct and practical blessing that I've noticed with prayer, specifically praying for the happiness and well-being of others. In each of my evening prayers, I often have one or more people I'm praying for. Each time I pray for someone else, my appreciation and concern for that person increases. It becomes easier for me to see that person the way God sees them.
I have also heard many counselors, teachers, and ecclesiastical leaders, when they speak of preparing for marriage, encourage family prayer. That is, a daily (or nightly) prayer between husband, wife, and children (if any). Any marital or familial dischord that may have occurred that day is subdued and put into proper perspective when a family prays together.
I am grateful for prayer, particularly as I pray for others, just as Jesus Christ did often.

Jesus Fed the Hungry and So Can You
I'm afraid I didn't do much in this challenge either, partially because I had a full day of errands and wedding stuff, not to mention work.
So, I feel the least I can do is send a positive message to my dozens of friends who are still in school and are hungry for success and relief:
The end is near, my friends! I wish you well in your final exams of the semester. I give you permission to sing your favorite Christmas (or holiday) song in triumph after each completed exam. Above all, I hope you each can find a reason to be grateful for each class you've taken this semester. :)
I try to share my resources to worthy causes and circumstances when I can.

Jesus Read the Scriptures and So Can You
I try to "feast upon the word of God" each day. I am very grateful for the light and truth in the Bible and the Book of Mormon.
This is one of my favorite verses:
"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."--John 16:33
...coupled with this verse...
"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."--Philippians 4:13

Jesus Healed the Sick and So Can You
Did I help heal the sick today? Did I somehow aid someone in their journey to recovery? Did I follow Christ's example today?
To be honest, I can't think of anything. I can't think of anything I did today that helped heal the sick. What I did do today, apart from go to work, was attend a Christmas party, volunteer for some silly Christmas charades and sing-alongs, filled a few empty minutes on stage with some beat-boxing and echo-voice, lost my ring, and have it found again.
Oh, I can think of something. I had all these letters to send out, and my fiancee had been quite anxious and stressed that I hadn't gotten it done this past week (which is strange, because all of hers were sent a couple weeks ago, not sure why she was stressed about my half). Anyway, I was finally able to stamp and mail the letters today. I informed her of my victory, and she replied with appreciation. I suppose that can be a bit of healing: reducing someone's anxiety.
It has been a nice day, anyhow. I am grateful for today, for the things I accomplished, and for the things I lost, found, and gave freely.

Jesus Worshiped His Father and So Can You
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has released a neat initiative for this Christmas season. You can find it here. There is a new challenge every day to follow the example of Jesus Christ in our interactions with others and in our personal spiritual lives. I didn't discover it until today, so I'm missing the first few days. Nevertheless, I'm going to participate in this initiative, and that will inform my posts of gratitude from now until Christmas.
So, today focused on worshiping God. An example of this is offering a prayer every day. I do have a habit of praying daily, so today I focused on being more focused during church. It helped that I was fasting for a special, personal purpose. As I ignored my usual distractions, I felt more light. I felt more enlightened with thoughts and ideas on small things I can improve on today. I was better at worshiping God today than I was last week! I am grateful for the personal blessings and inspirations I received when I focused more on Christ this Sabbath Day.

Fun with a New Game
I made up a game today, a small, simple game that uses chess pieces. Well, I tried it with a few friends today, and it turned out to be a harder, more interesting game than I originally planned. Maybe it was just the right circumstances. Anyway, I am grateful that my friends and I had a great time together with a new game.

Warm Pajamas
As much as I have been enjoying my current apartment, my one complaint is that the windows aren't very well insulated, and there's a large window right by my bed. This requires me to bundle up a bit as I go to sleep. That is why I am grateful to be able to wear pajamas that can keep me sufficiently warm.

Reflecting the "Niceness" of the Year While Writing to Santa
I haven't written a letter to Santa since I was...oh...about 7 or 8, give or take a few years. Yet today, I wrote one, and I'm glad I did. Granted, it was meant to be a message to a "Secret Santa," in which case I was just informing whoever would be assigned to me my likes and dislikes regarding small, inexpensive gifts.
Still, I decided to approach my letter as an actual letter to Santa. This led me to reflect on how I have been in 2016, a year some may consider an awful one, a long one.
For me, personally, it has been the best of my life. This year alone, I did the following:
Graduated college
Played several epic D&D adventures (and made great friends in the process)
Fell in love (and grew in love)
Found a full-time job
Got engaged
And the best days of the year (Christmas season) have barely begun! In my opinion, the best is yet to come!
Of course, I understand that all of these great things are personal to me. Not everyone's year has been so fortunate. Even so, we all have something to be grateful for, every single day.
Santa Claus is known to check his naughty/nice list. How have you changed this past year? Surely you have improved in some way because you now have another year's worth of life lessons and experiences. :)

A Very Productive Last Day of November
When you give a team of editors over a thousand tasks on Nov. 30th, what happens?
They crush the queue of tasks to oblivion.
When you give a man 200 envelopes to address on Nov. 30th, what happens?
He crushes it, while watching Top Gear.
This day has been a more productive day for me than most, and I'm grateful for that.

Clear Winter Day
Today's winter weather was much more mild. No less cold, but much more clear. I am grateful for a truly lovely winter day today. (And for those in my local area who hated the icy sidewalks, maybe you would benefit from walking like a penguin).

The Transit Buses That Could
Today, the weather wrecked havoc on after-work traffic! The wet snow and slush caused many drivers to become overly cautious or not cautious enough. As for me, I was expecting to ride the bus back home in this white wash.
At my transfer point, several buses got stuck trying to go up a hill. My bus kept persevering, pressing on foot by foot (or meter by meter, whatever floats your boat, I guess), just like the Little Engine That Could. My bus made it over the hill (worthy of applause for our great bus driver!), until it got stuck at another point. Another bus came to rescue us to take us to another transfer point, where I took my final bus to the stop two blocks from my place.
The snow was beautiful, but hazardous for all drivers. My fellow passengers were able to keep in relatively good spirits despite everything, and I felt the same way. I am grateful for today's transit bus drivers, for their diligence and perseverance as they navigated the weather and relied on the patience of others. They truly do great work. :)

Gingerbread Houses
I got to help make one of these the other day. So much fun! I realized that it had been too long since I had done this holiday activity. Apart from making lovely photos and displays with the new edible edifice, the best thing about gingerbread houses is the fact that they can be a wonderful milk-and-cookies dessert for several people (or for one person for several days, like in my case). I am grateful for gingerbread houses!

What's In [My] Name?
Today, my name was spelled wrong at a special family event. They put an H in Nicolas, and somehow my last name, Totten, became Totter on their records. This was soon corrected, but I thought it was funny while it lasted. I am grateful for opportunities to laugh with other people, even when things become a little inconvenient. :)

Sleepy Black Friday
Most of my Black Friday morning was truly black...because I didn't get out of bed until 2:30! Usually, on days like this, I feel like I've wasted the day away. But, it's a vacation day, and I actually got a few important errands done today! I am grateful for a Black Friday in which all I saw for half the day was the dark inside of my eyelids. :)

Happy Thanksgiving!
Some days, we forget to look around us.
Some days, we can't see the joy that surrounds us.
So caught up inside ourselves,
We take when we should give.
So for tonight, we pray for
What we know can be.
And on this day, we hope for
What we still can't see.
It's up to us to be the change,
And even though we all could still do more...
And even though this world needs so much more...
There's so much to be thankful for.
Those lyrics are taken from the song thankful, as sung by Josh Groban.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with loved ones. I for one am very grateful that I can find something to be grateful for every day, all year long (that's why I have this blog to prove it)!

A Few Reassuring Messages from Our President-Elect
I want to start by saying that some of my personal biases will be made manifest here, but only because I think my perspectives may be beginning to change.
I learned today that earlier this week, President-elect Donald Trump released an official video update of his transition to the White House and the plans being set up by him and his forming administration. Everything about this video looks and sounds official. Trump doesn't look anything like his rally performances, and—honestly—the things he says he and his administration are planning actually sound reasonable to me. I think any Republican or Democrat or otherwise could agree that, if nothing else, the sentiment and purpose behind what Trump explains stems from a good cause (in other words, I think very few American people would object to more American jobs, a more secure infrastructure, or fewer government regulations). Nothing terribly radical.
Now, I have had my own opinions about Trump, but I am willing to keep an open mind. I'm not saying that I'm naive enough to think that a person's personality changes overnight, but I do have faith in the office of President of the United States (the mantle, the responsibility). I have faith in the entire executive branch (because it includes many, many employees). I have faith in our government and in our people. I have faith that things will work out.
I'm still somewhat skeptical. I know Trump was reading from a teleprompter or something, but I also think he was giving the American people his own words. He seems to be trying to reassure everyone that he will be everyone's president, even if some may not accept him as their president.
Something else that gives me hope, President-elect Trump also provided a Thanksgiving message. I am grateful for Donald Trump's video messages to America. He has been making an effort to present himself as a presidential figure to all, and I'm willing to keep an open, inquiring mind.

Something else that gives me hope, President-elect Trump also provided a Thanksgiving message. I am grateful for Donald Trump's video messages to America. He has been making an effort to present himself as a presidential figure to all, and I'm willing to keep an open, inquiring mind.

Disney Continues to Deliver
I got to see the new Disney movie, Moana today, and I enjoyed it so much! I expected Disney to continue its tradition and standard of great, diverse protagonists (Polynesian Disney Princess in the making, anyone?). And, all in all, it delivered. Plus, Mark Mancina is still at it (since the days of The Lion King and The Hunchback of Notre Dame!). Plus, you also can't beat having Lin-Manuel Miranda helping with a few songs!
I am grateful for another wonderful Disney animated film, with the continuing high standard of great music and a great female protagonist.

Some Guy with a Santa Hat
When I hopped on the bus after work today, one of my fellow passengers was a man laden with a backpack, cargo pants, a heavy coat, and—best of all—a Santa hat. I'll admit that the thought crossed my mind that he looked and smelled homeless, but there was no way for me to know for sure. But, what matters here is what I noticed about the man's demeanor. He was cheerful and social. He said hi to me directly as I walked by. Plus, he had a Santa hat on! The first Santa hat I've seen in the upcoming holiday season! The man was happy and festive. He got off the bus a few stops later.
I am grateful for a cheerful bus rider with a Santa hat. :)

Live-and-Learn Moments
When I did laundry, I found a black pen in the pile. After a minute, it started to dawn on me that some of the ink could have rubbed onto the clothes. sure enough, I found small ink blotches on a couple items of clothing. Although it was frustrating, I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't affect more clothing. This was one of those live-and-learn moments. I am grateful for such moments, especially when the results of the mistake weren't terrible, which makes it easier to move on.

Wedding Photos
I participated in wedding photos today. The funny thing was, there were five other brides and their grooms walking around the grounds of an LDS temple with their respective photographers. I expected as much, since it was a Saturday. Still, the photographer did a good job of finding angles that didn't include a lot of other people. I am grateful for wedding photographers, and for photographers that work any special event. Their work is truly appreciated.

Friendsgiving
Never heard of the term "Friendsgiving" before, but I like it! It makes sense for young adults away from home, because sometimes we can't go home, or we want to enjoy the holiday with friends before going home to family. I am grateful for Friendsgiving, because the one I attended tonight was lots of fun and a great success!

Orange Fluff
In my family, a mixture of orange jello, cool whip, mini marshmallows, and mandarin orange slices is a staple in our holiday dinners. I bought the ingredients and attempted to make it tonight, for a Thanksgiving celebration with friends tomorrow. I tried to call my mom for the exact recipe, but she was busy with her own errands. So, I did the best I could, and now we'll just wait and see. :)
Regardless, I'm grateful for what my family has called "orange fluff" for years.

The Few, the Proud, My Meaningful Facebook Chats
I don't do very much on Facebook. I may spend time on the newsfeed to check out what my friends and family are up to, but apart from sharing links to my blog each day, I don't actually do much on social media. I've never been one to spend hours on instant messaging because I tend to focus on my current circle of friends and acquaintances.
That being said, I am grateful that the few direct interactions I have with people on Facebook have all been meaningful connections. As an example, I was chatting with a friend this evening, and we each shared our own good news and bad, sharing convictions and words of encouragement. This uplifting connection is made possible by using Facebook as a blessing. In this case, it was a good way to end my day. :)

Genre-Bending?
If portraying a person as a different gender is "genderbent," perhaps portraying an artistic medium in a different genre could be..."genre-bent"?
I thought about this as I was singing one of my favorite songs, Owl City's "Fireflies." I discovered that it was fun to sing in a reggae style with a Jamaican accent, and then in the style of a country song (but one of those in which the words are spoken, not sung, like in Johnny Cash's "Man Named Sue," or "Wolf Creek Pass"). Yeah. Lots of fun.
This is random, I know, but it's what came to mind when I thought about what I was grateful for today. I am grateful for when "genre-bending" works well, and for the myriad of opportunities to make it happen. :)
P.S.—If there is an actual, better term for what I've sloppily called "genre-bending," forgive me. Maybe crossover would be better? Whatever. It's for fun.

Fan Theorists on Youtube
Like most people I know, I am a big fan of Disney, Harry Potter, Marvel, Nintendo, and Star Wars (as well as a few other fandoms, but those are the biggest ones for me). Therefore, I am a big fan of people who like to discuss theories, cross-overs, big picture universe stuff. You know, the normal things geeks nerd out about.
I have recently discovered a few such theorists who have gained some attention on Youtube, and it is so much fun to watch their presentations (specific ones I've discovered include The Game Theorists and SuperCarlinBrothers). I am grateful for creative people who present fun, geeky theories for public view on Youtube.

Linguistic Voicing
There is a linguistic trait called "voicing." It refers to the usage of the vocal chords for certain sounds in a language. In English, for example, voicing is the only difference between a "b" and a "p," or an "f" and a "v." Today, I am grateful for voicing for a couple of different reasons.
First, whenever I try to come up with new names or words for a creative writing or role playing project, just changing the voicing may be enough (for example, if I wanted to have an alternate reality George Washington, I could simply call him "George Wodgington," using the "dge" sound in "badge" in place of "sh").
Second, I enjoy using voicing in my beat boxing. If I wanted to beat box while singing, all I have to do is use voicing to change "p" and "k" sounds into "b" and "g" sounds so I can use my vocal chords at the same time.
Voicing is something we all do every day, but I am still grateful for it. :)

Space Cowboys
This is one of the most interesting genres, and it has become popular. When I really think about it, it doesn't initially make sense, but somehow it works wonderfully. A great example is the TV show Firefly. How do these two words fit together? How are cowboy hats worn on spaceships, with laser gun duels occurring on distant planets? Well, I think it's creative, and it has been making its mark in fictional genres. I am grateful for the space cowboy genre.

Old Game, New Way
I like Harry Potter, but I have two roommates who love Harry Potter. They are bigger fans than I am! Tonight, I joined them and other friends in a round of Harry Potter Clue. I've always considered Clue a simple game, at least in terms of moving your token around the board. This Harry Potter edition was built such that doors would lock and unlock, and secret passages would change and even disappear! I was impressed, and these new mechanics made the game more of an adventure for me. I am grateful for different, creative editions of classic board games.
Also, Happy Veteran's Day! :)

Today's Training: What My Supervisor Does
We have good trainings at my work. Today's training was particularly interesting. The senior editors explained their job to the junior editors (like me). Until now, I had only a vague idea of what my direct supervisor did from day to day, and I'm grateful that I was able to learn that in today's training.

Someone Else Who Apparently Has Something to Say About Election Results
Yes, I'm one of those people. This post is not for those who are tired of reading long-winded, introspective thoughts, opinions, or beliefs in reaction to the American presidential election results. It is as much for me as it is for anyone who reads this.
Those who voted for Donald Trump didn't vote for him because of his mean, nasty flaws and words, but in spite of them. Those who voted for Hilary Clinton didn't vote for her because of her corrupt actions, but in spite of them. Can we all agree that we are really more similar than we may realize? Can we be united in our desire for a better America?
On a similar note, if Clinton had won, then half of the country would be just as concerned, upset, and frustrated as Clinton supporters and others now are. Would there be fewer riots in that situation? I don't think so. The only difference would be that riots would take place in Atlanta, Dallas, and Salt Lake City.
It may be hard for some to believe right now, but America has faced worse. For example, it has weathered a civil war, which resulted in part from a polarizing president, Abraham Lincoln, on the hot-button issues of the day: slavery, economics, and state rights.
The experience of campaigning for president is a far cry from actually taking on the tremendous weight of responsibility, trust, hope, skepticism, scrutiny, and historic precedent that comes with the most visible, guarded, checked, and balanced office in American government.
For Mr. Trump to be truly effective, he will need to work with all elected officials, the entire American people. He must earn the respect and trust of the American people, as every president before him needed to. Thus, he must compromise, as we all must. To be sure, it will take a lot for me to truly trust and respect the man, but I have always trusted and respected the office.
I remember when half the country complained that Romney didn't become president in 2012. People are more passionate this time around. Inherent in our democratic republic is the idea that we the people are to win with grace and lose with grace. Civility is a vital part of our civic duty.
All that being said, I am grateful for those of my friends and family who encourage me and others to focus on faith instead of fear, to look up instead of down, to go forward instead of backward.
May God bless America, as well as its citizens, as we work on the future together.

Election 2016
So tonight, we sleep without a president-elect. Americans (and perhaps the world) is either in horrified shock or thrilling jubilee. I have said many times on this blog how grateful I am to be an American. I was worried that the voting lines would be too long, but I'm grateful that I got to vote for who I felt would be the best and most effective political leaders. I am grateful for the hundreds of people combined from many news stations that have been staying up past midnight Eastern Time to try to crunch the numbers for us. I'm grateful for the presidential candidates that—love them or hate them—have been offering themselves in the service of the people and of public policy.
Our system isn't perfect, our people are flawed (this of course includes you and me), and our methods of the compromise we so desperately need more of in the public realm could be more prevalent. But, I am grateful for this presidential election, one like no other in living memory.
Okay, now I'm off to bed, hoping to wake up to a more certain consensus for our new president-elect.

At the End of the Day
To prepare for Election Day, I did a little bit of research and took a few quizzes to get a very basic idea of where the presidential candidates stand on issues, and to help me reflect on where I stand. for today, I was going to express gratitude for ISideWith.com and how helpful it is to me (so, thanks!), but something happened this evening that has caused me to change course for this post.
Many of my neighbors were going to a Four Square activity. Several "foursquares" were marked on the floor, and I joined fifty or more young adults in many great, casual games of Four Square. For two straight hours, from 7pm to 9pm, I completely forgot about the election tomorrow, and all of the stress, anxiety, and excitement associated with it. For two hours, the world was friendly, fun, and even "normal."
This leads me to think this: At the end of the day, we are still here. Those of us in America are still in America and we will continue to live our lives, no matter who our president for the next four years will be. I truly have faith in the American people, just as I have in every other election I voted in. When I focus on faith instead of fear, things seem to fit into proper perspective, and I believe that things will work out, at the end of the day.

Henry Knox
Henry Knox was an impressive individual, a friend to General George Washington during the American Revolution. I once heard the story of him taking some men to Fort Ticonderoga to recapture artillery, and then take those big, heavy cannons back to Cambridge, MA. The trek, going just one way, is just under 300 miles. Having spent some time in Utah, it helps me to think about walking from Provo to St. George. A simple drive today would take several hours. In the late 1700s, it took many weeks, in the dead of winter!
I'm currently running a Dungeons & Dragons game set in an alternative reality of the American Revolution. In today's game, a group of players "hiked" to Fort Ticonderoga to help Henry Knox with his artillery mission. It made for a fun game scenario. But, after hearing about the real, inspiring story, I am grateful for Henry Knox. He is one of the many men and women we are eternally indebted to for the formation of America as it stands today.

Good Bachelor Parties
I am aware of the stereotypes associated with bachelor parties. I'm here to express gratitude for those that I consider of good quality. I personally disagree with those that feel that alcohol or anything more extreme is a staple of such occasions. Why can't a guy just go laser tagging with his friends before sharing a lunch? That's what happened to the party I went to today. It was a very good time focused not on pleasure, but on friendships. I think that's what it should be like.

Walter Cronkite
Google honored Walter Cronkite's 100th birthday in yet another good doodle. My generation never saw much of this man, though I am aware (to some extent) his impact on journalism and on world events. I really appreciate the honest, straightforward, and respectful way he spoke and carried out his work.
I don't anticipate becoming a journalist, but I truly admire this man's class, his dedication, and his empathy for people. I am grateful for Walter Cronkite.

Dr. Strange Accents
I got to see the film Dr. Strange today (I suspect it was released at midnight in London, so American theatres had showtimes tonight). Oh. wow. I had no idea who Dr. Strange was, but I knew Marvel and Benedict Cumberbatch, and that's enough for me.
There were many things in the film that impressed me, but the first thing that caught my attention was Mr. Cumberbatch speaking with an American accent. I know good actors can train themselves to speak in different accents. Still, this was the first time I noticed this particular British actor speaking "American." I am grateful for Dr. Strange, and for strange accents. :)

True Politics, True Civics, True Dialogue, True Persuasion
Throughout this American presidential election cycle I've held on to certain biases and certain opinions. Like everyone else, there were few things people could say, especially with raised voices or words in all caps, to change my mind. And yet, I've considered myself a neutral citizen, telling myself that I was keeping aloof from all the political parties.
So I was surprised when I read someone's Facebook post, someone who had determined where they would stand on November 8th. I was surprised for two reasons. First, I actually didn't expect that they would reach the conclusion they did, choose the candidate they did. Second, and most importantly, this person's explanation of why they would be voting this way was incredibly honest, civil, and based on earnest research, consideration, and prayer. It was so refreshing. Most interesting of all, it was perhaps the most persuasive message in support of this certain candidate I had ever encountered.
You see, almost all of the people who I see and hear adamantly supporting this candidate or that one, almost all of them seemed—at least to me—to get on their individual soapboxes and proclaim why they are right and others are wrong. That frustrates me so much. Almost every politicaly-charged meme or video I see posted, almost every post or article I see that seeks to convince opposers, once and for all, of the "obvious" errors of their ways is like this. I think it's good to have strong feelings for what you believe is right, but are you really trying to convince your personal network on the Internet, your friends, that they are absolutely wrong and you are absolutely right?
Such have been my thoughts. I've had my own biases all along, and it took just one friend to come to the middle ground and explain his sincere thoughts and feelings to truly persuade me to rethink what I was thinking.
Today, I am grateful to see a simple demonstration of civil, respectful, even persuasive political dialogue on the internet.

Taking Down Halloween Decorations
Is it depressing to take down decorations the day after a holiday? I'm thinking of January 2nd, December 26th, and—in this case—November 1st. My office made some fantastic decorations, and we had to tear them down during our break today. Some of my co-workers mentioned that it was a sad thing to be tearing down all this fun, hard work. I agree it's a little sad, but when everything was cleaned up, I saw something a little different.
Everything was normal.
I hadn't seen this normal since two weeks ago. There was more room to move around. It was the old environment, and yet, it felt new. As much as I enjoy escaping reality with really cool fandoms and fantasy worlds (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Dungeons & Dragons, Legend of Zelda), as much as I really enjoy dressing up into other characters, I reallize how much I can truly appreciate normalcy. I am grateful that a couple weeks of Halloween festivities and decorations have led me to more fully appreciate things as they really, normally are.

Patriotic Halloween
Although it's Halloween, I have been feeling especially patriotic today. I had to register to vote in a new state (although I voted in Minnesota in the 2008 and 2012 elections) because I am now making this new state my home. I am grateful that I was able to take care of voter registration today.
In addition, I was able to catch Hamilton's America, a documentary about the process of creating and showing Hamilton the Musical, on pbs.org. My respect and gratitude for the early history of America and the people who were involved continues to be nourished.
Finally, I dressed as Nearly Headless Nick, a ghost from the Harry Potter stories, for Halloween today. In addition to my ghost make-up, I created a cheap campaigning button which read, "Nick for Headless Hunt, Sign the Petition!" I debated between that and "Granger/Lovegood 2016."
In any case, I am grateful for the most unintentionally patriotic Halloween of my life. :)

The Shot (Twang) Heard Round the World
This evening, I played a game in which I and nine other people reenacted the Battle of Lexington and Concord. This is the battle best known for "the shot heard round the world" that began the American Revolutionary War. We were assuming an alternate reality, so whatever happened, would be the "new history" in the game. One player was chosen at random, and it was determined that she was the one who fired the historic shot. The funny thing is, she was playing the part of a Native, equipped with a bow and arrow. Therefore, she instigated "the twang heard round the world." It was hilarious, and we all had great fun!
This experience gives me a newfound appreciation for the beginnings of America. Of course, Hamilton helped with that too. But, it's a new experience to live this intriguing and exciting part of history. I am grateful for "the shot heard round the world."
Prayer Will Change the Night to Day
Today, I felt really depressed, and I wasn't quite sure why. I was spending time with my family. I should be happier. As I thought about it, I determined I was weighed down by many personal concerns. I talked with my parents about it. Then, tonight, I felt the need to pray to my Heavenly Father. Like many times before, I felt spiritually strengthened and uplifted. I felt happier! I felt that everything would be okay.
Amazing what sincere prayer can do. I am grateful that, once again, a prayer to God turned by day around.

Not a Word Game Expert
I like to think of myself as an expert in the English language. I am not the expert, just someone who knows a little more about language.
I also like to think of myself as a lover of games. So, it may surprise some people that I'm not the best at Scrabble, or Boggle, or other similar word games. I even played Balderdash with my family tonight and didn't win (although I was tied for second place with my dad, who is an English teacher). Interestingly, I find such trivial losses a little humbling and enlightening, because I encounter new words or other quirks about the English language. So, I am grateful that I'm not the best at word games, because I continue to learn how great and hilarious my language is.

Trunk or Treat
Growing up, my siblings and I looked forward to not just trick-or-treating, but also trunk-or-treating. This event happens when people show up with decorated cars and candy to offer to the other families that come. It is trick-or-treating from car to car on a parking lot. It's always a fun community event!
I hadn't been to one in years, so I was very happy to attend one tonight. I didn't have a car, so it wasn't obvious to most kids that I offered candy like everyone else did. Nevertheless, it was so fun to just watch the people, the kids, the families, having a great time. I am grateful for trunk-or-treating!

A Blessing of Healing, on the Bus
I jogged this morning to catch the bus on time. As I waited at the bus stop, I felt very sick. I wondered if I would throw up, and I didn't know why. I hadn't eaten anything yet (I take breakfast at work), and I felt fine just half an hour before. Not knowing what to do, I got on the bus, light-headed, hopeful that I would get better before I arrived at work.
As is my habit, I took out my phone to read from the Book of Mormon. I decided to say a silent prayer beforehand. As I focused on reading the scriptures, I felt better. It was during that time that the sickening feeling I had slowly went away. I've felt fine ever since.
I thanked God in prayer, because I believe all good things, all happy circumstances, are blessings from God. Today, I don't know how I felt sick or why I felt better soon afterwards, but it was a moment of physical and spiritual healing for me. I am very grateful for a small and simple blessing of healing this morning.

Over the Garden Wall
Today, someone showed me something wonderful, cute, and clever: Cartoon Network's miniseries Under the Garden Wall.
I saw the first three episodes today, and I instantly fell in love with it! This is the perfect time to watch it, too! Two young boys lost in the woods, encountering every trope from every American Gothic legend. I've never gotten into Cartoon Network's shows, except this one! I'm going to watch all ten episodes when I can! Each episode is only ten minutes long so watching them all is basically a short film!
I never try to make my posts sound like advertisements. It's just that I was so struck and infatuated by this clever series. It's funny, meant for kids and adults (like Disney movies are), it's delightful, and it provokes a few thoughts. I am grateful for Cartoon Network's great work with Over the Garden Wall.

Walt Disney Mustache
I don't like having any facial hair on my face. I don't like the way it looks or feels on my face. On others, it's great. Just not on me. In my opinion.
But today, I got invited to a Halloween party and was asked to dress in a Disney-themed costume. I don't have much in the ways of costume. I have a black fedora...and normal clothes. Add a black Bic pen, and I become Walt Disney!
Yes, I used the pen to draw a mustache on my face. First time ever.
Somehow, I pulled it off! I got a few compliments on my simple costume!
I am grateful that, for one night, in celebration of one of the best holidays of the year (apart from Christmas), I was able to pull of a (fake) mustache.
May it never happen again.

An Epic Ending to an Epic Space Campaign
When explaining Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), I often compare it to a TV series (such as Sherlock, Once Upon A Time, or Parks & Recreation), in that the entire series is referred to a "campaign." A season or a single episode would be called an "adventure" or a single "session" of D&D. Campaigns can last for weeks, months, or (in more extreme or devoted cases) years. My friends and I tend to play through an entire campaign in a matter of months.
That being said, it is always exciting to reach a suitable conclusion to a campaign, just like the bittersweet and often satisfying ending to a TV series you've (binge) watched on Netflix for the past weeks or months. My friends and I ended another campaign tonight, and it was epic! A big bad space boss, betrayal within our own team, a few character deaths, startling revelations, and—ultimately—victory over the chaotic evil powers.
Personally, I like witnessing the end of a D&D campaign more than I like to watch the final episode of, say, Parks & Recreation or The Office. Why? Because in D&D, the ending was achieved with creative, geeky, and awesome friends. I am grateful for another great ending to another epic D&D game.

D.C. Friend Reunion
It's only been a year since my internship experience at Washington D.C., but I agreed with a few of my friends from that time that we needed to do something cool together. Tonight, we walked through a corn maze. I love corn mazes! I am grateful for the great time and the great company I enjoyed, as a direct result of my D.C. experience.

Office Decorating
My office building has a decorating contest. Not for individual desks, but for office team areas. During breaks throughout the week, everyone was busy making and improving their decorations. There was a lot of Harry Potter, forest, and web going on, and it was so awesome. My team has an elaborate tunnel of trees, with a natural-looking floor and sculptures at the end. I am grateful for fun office decorating for one of my favorite holidays!

Improving My Eye for Improvement
Filling out surveys can be difficult for me, but in just one specific way: giving constructive criticism. If there is any disadvantage to focusing on the positive as much as possible, it is that it is often tough to find or point out something that is wrong when, all in all, things are going well. I know how helpful it is to receive feedback on what is going well and what could be improved, I just have a hard time thinking of ways to improve things.
I took a few surveys today, for various reasons and for various people. In each one, I was able to come up with what I felt was good, honest, specific, constructive feedback (meaning, more than an "everything's great" answer). I felt proud of myself! I am grateful that I was able to come up with good, constructive criticism in a couple of surveys today.

A Goal, A Raise, A Boost of Confidence
Today, I was informed that I would be receiving a small raise at work. This combined with the news that I had accomplished a personal work goal has revitalized my appreciation for my work, because I felt appreciated. I am grateful for recent good news and personal accomplishments at work. :)

Home Teaching for the First Time
I've explained home teaching before, but it truly was the highlight of my day today. This evening, my teaching partner and I visited with a young woman who had never had home teachers before. It wasn't because her home teachers never came before, but because she had been baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints quite recently and wasn't familiar with home teaching. My partner and I were her first home teachers ever.
This was a tremendous blessing because the woman had an infectious, positive energy about life and about the gospel of Jesus Christ. As we met and discussed how we are blessed when we keep God's commandments, everyone in the room felt uplifted by the edifying influence of the Holy Spirit. It was a great visit, and the woman really appreciated it. "I like this home teaching thing," she said as we made our way out the door. :)
Lately, I've pondered my personal commitment to this Church and to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Lately, I've felt more like a dutiful disciple, rather than someone truly and sincerely devoted. Tonight felt different. I was reminded of spiritual experiences I've had in the past, and my testimony of Christ and His Church has been renewed and uplifted. I am grateful for an all-around wonderfully edifying home teaching visit today. It was a great blessing to our home teachee, and to me.

Work Out Inspiration!
When I listen to music, I often like to play a movie in my head. These imaginary films often feature original fictional characters from story or game ideas I have. As I worked out tonight, lots of new story ideas came to my mind! I love it when that happens! It was nothing truly ground-breaking, but it was progress. Plus, these new ideas and stories inspired me to work out harder. I am grateful for work out/music/story inspiration tonight.

A Good, Spiritual Discussion Between good Men & Women
The first section is for those less familiar with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The main story starts after the three asterisks.
For those of you who are less familiar with the services held by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is broken down into three one-hour blocks each Sunday:
Today, in church, the bishop arranged for a few of the ladies to come to priesthood meeting to lead a discussion about the principles of the law of chastity (basically: no sexual relations before marriage, and complete fidelity to one's spouse after marriage, although the discussion included pornography and, finally, repentance). I had never seen this happen before, and I wondered how this lesson would go.
What I'm grateful for is how edifying that lesson was. I was surprised, and more importantly, I felt the influence of the Holy Ghost during what became an insightful discussion about God's plan of happiness for His children, how the gift of procreation advances that plan, and its role in the eternal progression of God's children. The class was more of an open discussion that remained on a higher, more respectful plane than the awkward or base ways most outside influences approach the topic.
I am grateful that a good, spiritual discussion between good men and women about the law of chastity turned out to be very positive and edifying.
For those of you who are less familiar with the services held by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is broken down into three one-hour blocks each Sunday:
- one for a general sacrament meeting (partaking of the Lord's Supper, sermons by church members),
- one for "Sunday School" which can involve a selection of specialized religion classes (gospel topics, doctrine from a specific book of scripture, preparing to enter the temple, etc.),
- and one in which the women attend their own class and the men attend their own class (children and teenagers have their own classes as well). This last hour is known as Relief Society meetings for the women and priesthood meetings for the men.

Video Game Bucket List Just Got Smaller
I like classic video games (Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Pokemon, Tetris, etc.), and there was one game from the '90s that I've wanted to play through for years: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. I saw my cousins play it many years ago, and it looked really neat.
Luckily, my roommate had an SNES console, and the Mario RPG game! I played it off and on this past week or so. Tonight, I finally finished it! I don't have a written bucket list, but if I had one for video games, finishing this game would be on there, and I accomplished that today! I am grateful for the completion of another fantastic Mario adventure.

The Loud Man Upstairs
My roommates and I can hear the vibrations of loud music being played in the room directly above us. It is noticeable and, honestly, annoying to us. Since I hold the belief that all such issues are best dealt with directly and in person. I decided to go upstairs and talk with those higher residents.
The result was refreshing and surprising.
The guy who answered the door suspected that I was from the apartment below. I explained what we were hearing (almost feeling through the ceiling and the walls), and he explained that he was a music producer. He was friendly, and offered to set up a time for us to discuss this issue for mutual benefit. Pleasantly surprised, I agreed, and a time was set for tomorrow afternoon. My roommates were also taken aback when I told them what happened. We weren't bothered by loud music for the rest of the night, and—perhaps—we won't be for the rest of the semester.
I am grateful for simple miracles that come from simply talking directly and respectfully. I am grateful for the wonders that can be accomplished by discussion, not argument, by compromise, not grudging stalemates.

For the Kids at Rehearsal
One of my high school drama teachers issued a call for words of encouragement to the cast and crew in the midst of long (and often tedious) drama rehearsals. This, of course, got me thinking about my four years in high school music and drama. Below are my thoughts, in the form of a message I would give to those kids who are in rehearsals now:
Even as a college graduate with a full-time job, I can still see how my years in high school theater shaped me for the better. My love for the arts, my confidence in my own weirdness, my appreciation for the beautiful and profound, my habit of looking for light and truth from all sources, all of that began or was enhanced by my theater experiences.
To the kids who are now "enduring" those long rehearsals, I say: endure well! If you're not exhausted by the end of it, work harder! If you're not smiling throughout the journey, play harder! I could say many more things that many other alumni would say, so I'll conclude with this:
You are awesome, so keep being awesome.
High school theater had a tremendous impact on my life, and I am so grateful for those beautiful, expanding, creative experiences I had as a teenager.

Voting for the Win!
I heard through social media that it was too late for me to register to vote (I need to register in a new state). I panicked, until I did some research of my own. I'm too late to register by mail, but I can still do it in person. Phew! I was afraid I had procrastinated too much to make the effort to be involved in the upcoming presidential election.
Now, more than I've ever seen before, there appear to be arguments about the worth of a vote when cast in certain directions. I am still learning. I don't know if people will consider my vote "wasted" or not, no matter which way I vote. But I do know this: my vote matters to me. It has some small impact in my state alone. As excited as I am to see who the next president will be, dare I say that I am more excited to be involved in the process.
I'm prepared to face it: no matter which way I vote, someone I know won't agree with me. Someone I know may be upset at me for my decision. It's easy to see this as a lose-lose-lose situation:
"I voted for Clinton."
"That dirty, crooked liar!?"
"I voted for Trump."
"That moronic bigot!?"
"I voted for [third party candidate: Johnson, Stein, McMullin, etc.]."
"How selfish! You gave the election to [Hilary/Trump]!"
I prefer to see this as a win situation:
"I voted! I've contributed my voice. I'm grateful to be an American citizen!"
"Good for you! Who did you vot—"
"Ask me in a year or two, when we've all calmed down about it." :)
I'm grateful for the opportunity to vote my mind, my conscience, my opinion, whatever you want to call it.

Tourette's Syndrome
I recently gave an interview about my experiences with Tourette's Syndrome (I have a rather mild case of the condition—so, no, I don't shout swear words), for a project being done by an acquaintance of mine. Today, I got to see the final videos. I'm realizing that there are things I've learned and experienced simply because of my Tourette's. I am grateful for it. I have learned to be patient, to improve, to be persistent, to be understanding of others, to relax, to focus, to endure well, and to find joy in the little things in life. I am grateful for the experiences I've had thus far because of Tourette's Syndrome.

All I Ever Wanted in a Birthday Celebration
I have been surrounded by blessings today (not that I'm usually not surrounded by blessings, it's just that I've noticed them more today). I recently celebrated a birthday, and it was today that I was able to celebrate with friends and family. I received presents that were truly unexpected, and yet were very thoughtful. I appreciate all of the gifts and cake and such (not so much the cheesy birthday song...multiple times...in multiple languages and accents).
The best gift I received today, and every day, was the one I expected and appreciated the most: genuine love, respect, and appreciation from the people I care most about. Who could ask for anything more?

Look for the Lesson; It Will Come
I know prayers are heard and answered. There has been a concern on my mind for the past several weeks (even months). It has to do with serving God with your whole soul, going beyond mere duty and serving out of love for God and for others, not just because you should. I am still figuring things out, but as I fasted and prayed about this issue, I realized that several General Conference talks covered the topic last week, and at church there was a whole lesson about it. I am grateful that answers are coming to my questions these past couple of weeks.

Witch Hat Cookies: GF Edition
I have been making and handing out witch hat cookies for exactly 20 years now, and this is the first time I'm making gluten-free versions. I had to go to the grocery store today to try to find something round, preferably chocolate brown, that could act as a gluten-free substitute for the cookies I usually use. It was a challenge, but I've gotten used to finding out what has wheat and what doesn't. Eventually, I found what I needed, and I'm excited to be able to continue my annual October tradition and share it with friends who otherwise couldn't enjoy it. I am grateful that I could (eventually) find gluten-free cookies.

Workplace Decor
You know you're fortunate when you see impressive Halloween decorations (especially well-laid-out fake spider webs) at work. I may be a college graduate, but I'm still don't consider myself rich enough to splurge on impressive Halloween decorations. I'm grateful that my workplace is becoming appropriately festive for the upcoming holiday.

Public Art: A Colorful Mural
On my way back from work, I get to walk by a long, colorful mural painted on a concrete wall. I appreciate public art displayed like this. This is the type of graffiti I can get behind. I am grateful for the colorful mural I get to pass by and admire every work day.

Bus Drivers (Especially Aaron)
I really appreciate the work bus drivers do. Right now, they get me to and from work five times a week. The ones I meet are generally quite cheerful and friendly. There is one older gentleman bus driver I admire in particular, let's call him Aaron. As I got on the bus, I noticed he had a badge on his right shoulder which read: "Two Million Miles Accident Free." Amazing! Evan, you, especially, are awesome.
My sincere gratitude goes out to the bus drivers, and I truly try to remember to thank them as I step off the bus.

Kept Losing...But I Made Good Words
Although I love the English language, I'm not an expert in Scrabble, especially the increased pressure of Speed Scrabble. I didn't play Scrabble today, but I did play Bananagrams, and that's pretty much the same thing. I kept losing because the game just goes so fast! But, as a consolation, I ended up making several great words: quoin, garotted, and umbrige, to name a few of the best ones. Though I lost, I'm grateful for the great words I could make in the game.

Rent Reminder
My current apartment complex was kind enough to send me a text reminder to pay my rent before it becomes officially due later this week. I'm usually pretty good at remembering such things, but today I am grateful for this little rent reminder.

Staying Alert at Conference
I won't lie, sometimes it's hard to stay awake for General Conference, especially in the comfort of one's own home. But, I was able to listen to almost all of the talks and learn something valuable from them. That small thing alone is something to be grateful for.

A Small, But Difficult, Moving Job
I did a moving job this afternoon, and it was one of the harder ones I've done (and I've done lots of moving in my life, for myself and for others). There were pieces of furniture that needed to be stacked and restacked and over again. If we were playing Tetris, we lost multiple times over two hours. However, not only did we eventually make everything fit well, we had the energy to accomplish it! I was sweating a lot, and I sometimes don't have great confidence in my own physical strength, but I am grateful that today's moving job was successful!

Now We Meet Again
I've said before that I love October for many reasons, and it all starts with the General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I'll admit I wasn't the best listener at the last conference six months ago, but this time I will be a little better, and that's the whole point of the conference. The sermons and music that will be presented tomorrow and Sunday are divinely inspired. I truly and firmly believe that. After an early leave from work, and relaxing on a Friday night, I am grateful that General Conference weekend has come again at last.

Kid President's Gratefuls
I love it when I see people expressing gratitude in their own way. Have you ever heard of Kid President? He's awesome, and he's trying to make the world more awesome. Today, I encountered the video below, and it made me smile. It encourages me to keep looking for my daily gratefuls in the little things.
And that's awesome. :)

Super-Vision
My supervisors at work decided to set a team goal for the day. In other days, I'd calculate how many tasks each employee would need to complete, on average, in order for our team to meet a goal, and I'd do it. Today's goal was more ambitious, and I realized that if I did my averaged-out portion of the work, I would break a personal record.
Well, let's get to work, shall we?
Such was my attitude, and I did it! It wasn't the hardest thing in the world, but I pushed my limit a little bit more today. I am grateful for the "super" vision of my supervisors today, believing we—as a team—could achieve something ambitious today.

My Word
I was humbled today when someone I've first met about a month ago said that I am a man of integrity. A humbling and reassuring compliment. That got me thinking about my word (as in, "being a man of my word").
I briefly reflect on how I use my word. I write words to work, create, and to express daily gratitude. I speak words when I act or tell a story. I talk of what I have done, what I am doing, and what I will do. I verbally react to the world around me, for good or for ill. I use my word to create my own limits when I say, "My word is my bond." I love words, and I often play with them (those who know me know of my affinity to puns, because they're awesome and clever). I am constantly fascinated by language, which makes me grateful for the way I can use language positively.
I believe that God brought me here to earth, and has given me a lifetime to act—and speak—according to the dictates of my own conscience. I am grateful to have my word.

Tonight's Debate: It's Real
Even though presidential debates often annoy me to no end, for various reasons, I appreciate the purpose they serve in presidential campaigns. If I'm being honest, I'd say the debates make this presidential race feel much more real than any amount of social media discussion or (goodness forbid) contentious argument. Online, it all just feels like some constant threat or annoyance over all American's heads every day we spend at a computer. But seeing candidates' faces on TV, providing speeches and argument, and having sincere discussions with friends and/or family afterwards, that feels real. That is true American politics. Compliments About Classroom Comments
In my experience, if you give a talk, share your personal testimony, or perform a musical selection in a Mormon Sunday service, at least a few people will give you compliments about what you've said or presented. I always appreciate such compliments, and I often try to sincerely give them. But, getting compliments for comments you gave in a religious class? While that still happens, that happens less often, I feel. Someone gave me one of those compliments today, and I appreciated it. That means that they and I were both attentive and learning in the class. I am grateful for compliments about classroom comments.

Beauty and the Beast
Because I've recently seen a video of Angela Lansbury singing the title song at 90 years old, because I'm excited about the live-action rendition of the movie starring Emma Watson, because I watched the Disney movie tonight with friends, I am grateful for Beauty and the Beast.

Game Night and Play Testers
I love playing games, and sometimes I get ideas for new games. For example, I made some homemade cards for a Harry Potter-themed group game (kind of like Mafia or Werewolf). I thought my roommates would like it, since they are huge Harry Potter fans. We all really enjoyed a few rounds of the game. Lots of laughs happened throughout! To top it off, my roommates offered some suggestions for improvement. I appreciated the feedback. I am grateful for a fun game night, and some helpful play testers!

Supervisors
Each morning, I set a goal to complete a certain number of tasks for the work day. It seemed a reachable goal, until a meeting lasted much longer than anticipated (it was a good, productive meeting; I learned a few things). When I realized I had less time than usual, I wondered how I could meet this goal. It seemed I wouldn't
Now, no one would have batted an eye if I didn't meet these goals today, but I still wanted to see if I could do it.With fifteen minutes to go, I had one task left to do to meet my goal, and...
...something in the system stalled.
For some reason, I couldn't get another work assignment. I smiled at this "predicament." I waited a few minutes for the problem to resolve (after reporting the issue to a supervisor), and—wonder of wonders—I finished that last task and met my goal just as 5pm hit. Yes! Win! I felt so accomplished. I appreciate the work my supervisor does.
To add to the blessings, my boss's boss (a nice, friendly guy) saw me out in the rain, headed home, and offered me a ride. How nice of him! I am grateful for my work supervisors. I work for and with wonderful people.

Google Doodle: First Day of Fall 2016
Google has done it again with its doodles. You can find this adorable doodle if you make this search:
First Day of Fall 2016 Northern Hemisphere Google
Can we all appreciate the fact that the rocks are so happy about the falling leaves, but that there's also one little rock on the right that just looks so miffed about it. This is a perfectly cute depiction of reactions I see every year. Most people love the incoming seasons, but there are always people who complain about the incoming cold, and wished summer would stick around.
Well, too bad. Fall is here, and it is glorious. Deal with it. ;)
I am grateful for Google's lovely doodle tribute to the first day of my favorite season of the year.

Early Morning Hazard, But It's Alright
Several hours after my last post, at about 2:45am, the fire alarm went off at my apartment complex. Yeah...it was awful. Acting on cue, the guys who lived in the building evacuated. Firefighters appeared after about 10–15 minutes, and the alarms were finally called off for good a little after 3:15am.
I'm glad any hazard, whatever it was, was taken care of. But I'm also very grateful that I still had the capacity to work today. I was not nearly as tired as I thought I would be, though I needed a nap in my room after work.

It's Gonna Be Okay
The reason I write in this blog every day is I feel strongly that the Internet, the world, is in desperate need of a constant, consistent flood of goodness daily. When I spend enough time on social media, I can feel the effects that the many negative and cynical and doubting messages have on my mind. This is a huge part of why I have this blog.
It is also why I greatly love and appreciate the most recent song released by The Piano Guys. On July 16, 2016, I attended a Piano Guys concert in Utah. It was my first time seeing my favorite music group live. what an amazing concert! The highlight for me was when they performed a world premiere of this song, and filmed it for their video. Tonight, that video was released, as you can see in the link. I'm in that crowd, somewhere near the back...somewhere.
In any case, the message of this song, every word sung by Al van der Beek, resonates with me strongly. Those words agree with my belief in Jesus Christ and a God who is just and true and full of love.
So, although I am saddened by the pain and suffering of humanity in diverse places, although I often view injustice with clenched fists and furrowed brows, although I am concerned about the warm contentions that seem to dominate many American political discussions today, although I often worry about my own well-being and about those I love, despite all of this, I truly believe that, in the end, it will all work out. #It'sGonnaBeOkay :)

Double-Blind Surprises
Tonight, I was invited to a dinner event with lots of friends and family around. At first, I didn't think I could make it, but things worked out such that I could. I decided to make it a surprise, so I didn't tell anyone I was coming.
It was a wonderful dinner, but there was someone I especially wanted to surprise, and that person wasn't there because they felt sick. Oh well, I thought. Good food and good company nonetheless. Imagine my surprise when the person decided to show up! Double surprise! It was a good evening for everyone. I'm grateful for double-blind surprises.

Photographers
Today, I found myself in a park in the midst of people trying to take quality photographs of each other. Most were dressed for a high school homecoming dance, but there were the occasional family and engagement photos. I gained a greater appreciation for friendly photographers who know how to take good shots and how to get people to look their best. I am grateful for special event photographers.

Best Scavenger Hunt Ever!
Some friends organized an epic scavenger hunt, with clues that led to specific points in the city. My team almost won, too! The clues were challenging at times, but it made me feel clever when I figured it out. I am grateful for an epic scavenger hunt.

Huh...Didn't Realize I Had That
I thought I had some envelopes, some stamps, and a few photos lying around. But, I didn't know where they were. Today, I found them all. They were hidden in plain sight (it didn't help that my things are strewn all over my room still, after only a few weeks of living here)! I am grateful to find what I already had.

Steampunk
I just really love the style of steampunk. Sometimes I'm not sure why. I think it's a combination of classy ladies & gents (top hats and all), cyborgs and robots, gears, invention, and mystery. It is among my favorite genres and styles. I am grateful for steampunk.

Others Have Done It Before
This week, I've been taking care of a few things with my living and financial arrangements. I decided to call my parents for some advice, and to update them on my life as usual. I may sometimes be classified as a millennial who is just realizing how to "adult," but overall I realize I'm doing well. A big part of that is I know people who have done it all for the first time before, and they love me enough to help me. I am grateful for that. :)

I Work With Such Nerds, and It's Wonderful!
I've realized this since my first week of work. The people I work with are nerds about some of my favorite things: Pokemon, Star Wars, Hamilton, Dungeons & Dragons, and the English language, to name the most notable fandoms among some of my co-workers. Apparently, today was National Video Game Day, and my workplace hosted a party at around lunch time! There were several game consoles going ( playing Mario Kart, Super Smash, etc.), a viewing of Wreck-It Ralph, and lots of pizza. It was a great way to spend a lunch hour!
I am grateful to work with like-minded people, people who like to work hard, who love words, and who love some of the more nerdy and geeky things in our world. It's a pleasure to work with each of them. :)

9/11: Fifteen Years of Progress
It has been 15 years since the 9/11 attacks. My young eyes didn't realize at the time that they were viewing American history. When I was in D.C. for an internship about a year ago, one of the more memorable trips was to the Newseum. There, they have a powerful exhibit about the events of 9/11. The centerpiece of the exhibit was a large, crumpled remnant of a media tower from one of the World Trade Center buildings.
I was a kid at the time, and I wasn't sure what all the fuss was about. Besides, I didn't know anyone in New York. I've never even been to New York. Still haven't. But, I think about our country then, and I look at our country now. My conclusion: despite what many people say or complain on any platform, social or otherwise, I truly believe the United States of America has learned a lot in fifteen years, and that we are a better nation now. I am grateful for 15 years of progress since those unfathomable, unthinkable events.

Solo Football Party
I saw a football game at my apartment tonight. It doesn't happen very often, but it was a BYU vs. Utah game. I wanted the Y to win...and we missed it by a hair. The funny thing was, I was the only one in my apartment at the time. It would have been more enjoyable with other people there, but I still enjoyed reacting, talking, almost yelling at the screen with excitement, because I don't do that very often. I am grateful for a solo football party. :)

When Someone Else Says "Brrr..."
It's starting to get a little chilly. I wore a sweatshirt today! My favorite half of the year (the cold half) is coming! I like it, and am grateful, when someone says "brrr" in September.

Voting: On Top of Things
You know, I've got about a dozen to-do tasks that nag my mind each day. Each day, I try to work on one or more of them. Sometimes, I forget to or don't feel like doing anything after work. Today, I noticed a friend of mine applying for an absentee ballot, making sure everything would be in order, in order to vote at the upcoming presidential election in a couple of months. I am grateful for a friend's reminder to stay on top of a citizen's duty: to vote.

Don't Feel Like Dancing
I like dancing, and I've enjoyed many dance parties and events since high school. There was one in my area tonight, in conjunction with a picnic event, and oddly enough, I didn't feel like going. This could be the result of getting "old," or getting engaged, or not really knowing anyone there. In any event, I felt like doing other things, being more productive, working on personal projects. Is this part of becoming an adult (I say this jokingly, for the most part)?
Dances have their place, but it wasn't the place I needed or wanted tonight. I am grateful that I can feel satisfied and fulfilled in my current relaxed environment.

When the Message is Sweeter Than the Refreshments
Religion classes, also known as institute, are offered during the week near my apartment. I have gone to these classes lots of times and I have always enjoyed the gospel lessons and the food served afterwards.
It has been a few weeks since I've attended, and I am so grateful I attended today. The teacher presented an uplifting and inspiring lesson, which led me to ponder on my personal spiritual habits, the good and the bad. Although doughnuts were offered after the lesson, I enjoyed the lesson a lot more than any amount of sugar and fried dough.

A Day Dedicated to the People Who Work
Happy Labor Day! I had a nice holiday weekend with people I love and care about. Though I didn't have work today, I am grateful for those people who did, and for those who work each day in the constant and worthy effort to improve lives, communities, and nations.

When No One's Home for the Holiday...Except Us
It's a holiday weekend, which means many people are out of town, visiting family and friends. However, there are always those few people that have no where to go and no plans. That's why I love it when someone puts together a game night or some sort of party or outing. If no one else is doing that, I'm always happy to set it up and invite people! I am grateful for spontaneous holiday get-togethers, for the people who have no where to go for the holiday weekend. It's also a great way to meet new people.

Taking Notes
I believe I have a pretty good memory, but I've found taking notes makes it easier to remember. I take notes for homework, planning, personal projects, and anything else I am afraid to forget. I am grateful that I can take notes when I need to.

Rewatching in the Cinema
My roommate invited me to go with him and some friends to see Star Trek: Beyond. I had already seen the movie in theaters, but I thought it would be fun to watch it again with more good company. I really enjoy watching someone else watch a good movie. It is also great to watch a movie after knowing the endings and punchlines. I had fun watching my friends' reactions to the action and jokes. I am grateful for the re-watch value of many great, enjoyable cinema films.

Retrospect: The Good and the Needs Improved
Being involved in writing and editing means that criticism and comments are my constant companion. That being said, I really appreciate those who give me examples where I made mistakes, and where I was superb. I am grateful for people who honestly give me both kinds of comments. I need to know how to improve, and it's also very helpful to know when and how I did a great job along the way.

Super Mario Galaxy!
My roommates have some Nintendo games, so I like to play them when no one else is using the TV. One of my favorite games in the collection is the Super Mario Galaxy 2 game. I've played the first one, and I was interested to see how this one would be.
So, you're familiar with Mario, right? The iconic red mustached plumber that jumps on turtles and throws fireballs? Well, imagine him jumping from planet to tiny planet, jumping with gravity and antimatter. It's challenging! There are many nerve-wracking puzzles in the game, too! All in all, a fun ride. I'm grateful for the Nintendo people for coming up with such a creative, "out-of-this-world" game as this.

So Late...But It's Alright
I woke up so late that I missed my bus by a good hour. With school traffic, I was about 90 minutes late! I was so frustrated with myself, because I like to think that I'm a good employee.
But, I figured I could arrive early and/or stay late at the office until I've made up all the minutes I lost. True, today I lost time. But, looking at the week as a whole, I will be right on time. Things will work out, if I have patience. I am grateful for that.

Moving Wards, Moving Records
Every time a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints moves to a new place, they typically work with local church leaders to have their membership records moved into the new ward (congregation). That's what I took care of today. I am grateful for an easy process to move from one welcoming ward to another.

Family Together, Father's Blessings
It is a bit of a ritual in my family, and many other families I know, for the father to give a blessing, a kind of prayer over each of his children before a new school year. That happened with my family tonight. Even though I am not in school, I received a blessing all the same. Why not, right? I am always grateful for the times I get to spend with my family when we are all together, including these special moments when my dad asks the Lord to bless each of us in our individual, promising futures.

Emailing IT Help Desk
The other day, I sent a help request ticket to the IT/maintenance department at work, asking them to tighten a loose door handle. Today, I noticed it was fixed! I sent another ticket, thanking them. :)
However, IT responded by saying that they didn't fix it, some Good Samaritan must have done it, but they appreciated my gratitude.
You know, even so, I am very grateful for the people behind the help desk, whether they be IT, maintenance, or both, or other. They do great work.

Podcasts! West Wing! The Best of Everything!
I think I've said before how much I love the TV show The West Wing. I completed the show a couple of years ago now. Well, recently, someone told me about some podcasts they were listening to, and one of them was talking about West Wing! Former actors and other collaborators from the show talk about it! Can life get any better?! Now, I have something to listen to when I exercise!
I am grateful to learn about a podcast about my favorite TV show.

Complete What Matters
As happens too often, I haven't been able to complete all I wanted to complete today. But, I didi get some stuff done, and better yet, I got the most important things done (for example, giving loved ones a call). I am grateful that, of what I have accomplished today, I've done the things that matter the most to me.

Catching Up, Almost Finished!
For the past couple of months, I've been working on a personal project to catalog all of the music compositions and arrangements I have written. Recently, I've gotten way behind schedule, by a couple of weeks, actually. I was frustrated enough to pick back up where I left off and get caught up. I did the extra work tonight, just before writing this post. I am very close to finishing this project now.
I am proud to say I did it! I'll be going to bed a little later than I'd like, but I feel much better about the project, and even about myself! This inspires me to get caught up on a couple of other personal projects (journal and other personal history records) I've neglected recently.
Ever since I was young, I have often struggled to finish any self-regulated project. I am grateful that I am pressing forward on my current projects now.

Paris
I noticed a friend of mine recently visited the city of Paris. I've been there myself, over a decade ago. In its own way it is beautiful and charming. Though I know only a little French, I feel I am much more fluent in French appreciation. I am grateful for Paris, for the culture and beauty the whole city contributes to the world.

I've Been Welcomed

On the plus side, I've received a warm, friendly welcome to my new space. I am grateful for welcoming people in a new apartment complex.

I Can Make Fire...With Some Help!
Had a bonfire with family today. I always enjoy those. I was the most recent Boy Scout in the group, so people turned to me to start the fire (even though I only got up to the rank of Star). I got things set up, and with a little help (especially in operating a small lighter), we got a fire going! I am grateful that I know how to start a small, safe fire for family occasions like this. :)

My Home of Four Years
For the past four years (with the exception of that one semester in D.C.), I have lived in the same apartment complex. It has been good enough for me, and has served as a fantastic home during my college years. Now, I must move to my new living arrangement. I am grateful for my four-year home. Many lasting memories and friendships were made there. I will miss it for a little bit, but I am very excited for the adventures I can see in the months and years ahead.
Here's to another life chapter!

Roommate for 2016...So Far
Once again, I have been blessed to have become good friends with my roommate. Since it is not the interim between school semesters, he has left for home until school starts again. Though we will likely run into each other again, it's still a change, and I will be moving soon as well. Anyway, I'm grateful for a roommate and a friend I've known for the entirety of 2016 so far. I am grateful for his goodness and diligence. I am especially grateful for his friendship.

When I "Chews" to Wake Up
I was feeling so tired and sleepy today at work. I was really dozing off at my desk. So, I decided to go get some peppermint gum. Chewing the gum actually helped me stay awake! Who knew? I am grateful that I could "chews" to stay awake today.

Bus On Detour...No Problem
One of the buses routes I used today was on detour. I noticed the early left turn and wondered if I would be able to figure out when I should get off to get to my place. I soon got my bearings, and I was--and am--grateful that I'm familiar enough with the city that I didn't get lost.

Sharing Space
One of my roommates recently bought a really fascinating space exploration/survival game. I was so intrigued by it when I saw him play it. The video game looks and feels like a vivid dream. He was kind enough to let the rest of us play it if we wanted to.
And I wanted to.
I am grateful that my roommate was willing to share the space exploration experience with me.

Connecting with Old Connections
It's not something I'm in the habit of doing, keeping consistent contact with people who have moved on, away from me. But, it is refreshing to hear from a good friend. That's what happened to me today, an hour-long phone call from a friend I haven't seen in years. I am grateful I could connect with an old friend, an old connection, today.

Brazilian Grills
I very much enjoyed lunch at a Brazilian grill restaurant today. I appreciate the unique dining experience in such places. The diners are given unique control over when and what type of foods (mostly meats) they will have while they are there, while also favoring a diversity of flavors. I am grateful for Brazilian grills.

Engagements
Summer is beginning to end, and that means I've survived yet another torrent of engagement and wedding pictures/posts on social media. I am at that age where many of my friends are deciding that marriage is a great idea and sharing that with the internet.
But, I am grateful for engagements. The couple is happy, all their friends get to send their congratulations and best wishes, and I just generally see a lot of good that comes from them. I'll admit that these past few years I've felt frustrated at times to see so many people hop on the engagement and marriage train. But, I'd like to get there too someday, so someday I will be one of those people. Life goes on, and we continue to celebrate and congratulate on these happy occasions.

Michael Phelps
His collection of Olympic medals is incredibly impressive, but what impresses me the most is his story as I've heard it. Shortly after the 2012 Summer Olympics, Phelps got into trouble and found himself in some tough situations. The media reported how far he had fallen. Tonight, I watched him compete in his swimming events, a reformed man. He is, once again, the champion people knew from 2012.
This is just a high-profile example of how people can change for the better, how people can become their very best and recover from great setbacks. I am grateful for such human examples.

This is, by far, my favorite comedy sketch of all time. I really enjoy other comedians: Bryan Regan, Studio C, and others, but this Abbott & Costello classic just gets me every time. I am grateful for "Who's On First?"

Headache and Tired Eyes
I had a lot of that today, especially at work. It was hard to focus and it felt like a very unproductive day. I decided I would try to rest my eyes on the bus ride after work. I wondered if these symptoms were the result of turning my eyes from one screen to another throughout the day yesterday. I felt better after I had some dinner and some shut-eye to rest and rejuvenate myself for the rest of the day. Strangely enough, I am grateful for the headache and tired eyes I had today, because such pain makes me aware of ways I can change my life for the better.

Collaborative Editing
Normally, we spend most of the work day in our individual cubicles. Silence is punctuated only by the sound of punched computer keys. This morning, however, for various reasons we spent a few hours working in pairs. During those hours. we were much more chatty and it was more enjoyable to work with someone else. We were all getting used to a new system and we were helping each other. I am grateful for collaborative editing. It was fun while it lasted. :)

The Joy of Teaching Someone A New Game
I enjoy teaching, especially if it involves teaching someone how to play a favorite game. I got to do that today. For several hours today, I got to teach a friend how to set up and play a role-playing game. It's always a blessing to share interests and hobbies. I am grateful for the experience of teaching someone a new game.

I Know My Limits
My original plan was to spend all day at an amusement park, but around dinnertime I felt exhausted. I decided, along with the friends I was with, to call it a day earlier than expected. It was still a wonderful and enjoyable day. I am grateful that I can be aware of my own limits and act accordingly.

Olympics!
They're finally here! I will confess, it's not likely that I will actually see much of the Olympics this year. I don't really have my own TV, and I've never been a follower of sports. But I've always loved what the Olympics represent. I especially love the amazing opening and closing ceremonies.
Also, my office had Office Olympics and each team was assigned a country. I represented France today in a friendly competition of Table Tennis. France didn't win anything today...
I am grateful for the Olympics! There is so much good that can come and does come from it.

Audiobook Actors
What exactly do you call those people who speak in audiobooks? Book tellers? Book speakers? Book voice actors? I think actors fits the bill here. I've tried my hand at it myself, and it is quite difficult! I find myself stumbling over words and correcting myself. Hardest of all is the need for water. Your throat dries out, and you need to stop...but you want to keep reading and acting because it's so enjoyable...
I have great appreciation and respect for audiobook actors. I'm grateful for them.

Writing Groups
Besides a few writing classes in college, I've never been part of a writing group before...until now. I'm excited about it! As part of such a group, I get to read, write, and edit fiction! I get to grow a little in a field I enjoy! There is something special and fulfilling about being part of a group of people that can create awesome things. I am grateful for writing groups.

Family Bonding: A Friendly Family Feud Over Netflix
My family shares one Netflix account, and Netflix only allows two users in that account on at one time. For the past couple of days, I was involved in some enjoyable text message conversations in which one person would say, "Hey, who's hogging the Netflix?" and we'd all admit it and let others go on, and so forth. I admit I was part of the problem because I was indulging in one episode after another of Top Gear. But, who am I to take all the Netflix space?
This never became a fight, but a delightful and open discussion about coordinating our times so we don't step on each other's "nets" as we get our internet TV "fix." I dare say this is yet one other thing our family enjoys bonding over, even with the distances that currently separate us. I am grateful for a friendly, family feud over Netflix. (I think "feud" is a strong word here, but it starts with "f," I absolutely adore alliteration!)

Those "Dolly Levi" People
Do you have a "Dolly Levi" or a "Yente" or a Jane Austen "Emma" among your friends and associates? These are the kinds of people that like to be matchmakers. I don't know exactly what it is about these people who like to try to arrange people's lives, but they exist, to the annoyance or enjoyment of their friends and family. I've met a few of them. One of them even set me up on a blind date a year ago. I think there is something endearing about these people because, if their heart is right, they only want to see people happy. I am grateful for people who try to help other people to become happy.

My Time Matters
Sometimes, ecclesiastical boundaries need to change. That happened today and I am now part of a congregation that has a new bishop (LDS edition of what many see as a pastor). I won't be in this new congregation for very long, but I am grateful for the opportunities I will have in the next little while to do what I can to support it and be a good asset.

Great Customer Service
I really appreciate people who work customer service jobs, especially since I've had several such jobs before. Today, while shopping at a smaller store, the employees couldn't get a storage closet to open to show a few pieces of their merchandise to show for us. The workers had a very cheerful, positive outlook on it, and we all laughed about it. My experience at that shop was very positive and successful, mostly because of the employees there, even though the closet was still stuck closed when I left the shop.
I am grateful for good, personal, genuine customer service employees.

Nerdy Conversations
When a few old veterans chat about old war airplanes...
When a couple of millennials become giddy when they encounter a Charizard on Pokemon GO...
When a couple of men on Top Gear drone on about the wonders of an old V8 engine...
When a few co-workers talk about the use of the oxford comma...
In such times, I grin like a nerdy fool, because in such times, people are having a nerdy conversation. They are speaking in an accepted set of jargon and vernacular language about a topic they mutually love and appreciate and have expertise in. I appreciate witnessing and participating in such moments. I am grateful for nerdy conversations.

Cheap, Healthy Vending Machine Snacks
At BYU, and now at my workplace, there are vending machines with all kinds of food. I've been making a greater effort to eat healthy, and it turns out that my work has plenty of cheap, healthy snacks available. It also has a lot of candy and soda, but thank goodness those aren't the only options. I am grateful for cheap, healthy food in vending machines.
